21 Sep 2021 / Campbell exits training on a high

Andrew Campbell couldn’t have scripted a better ending to his 25-year training career.

In his recent outing at Cambridge last Thursday, Tannahill, a cherished member of the stable, triumphed in the Garrard’s Horse & Hound 1550, providing trainer Andrew Campbell with an unforgettable farewell.

Campbell, who boasts numerous accomplishments in his career, including several prestigious Group One victories, lauded Thursday’s victory as the pinnacle of his lifelong dedication to horseracing.

“This win is probably the highlight of my career,” Campbell declared with emotion. “I’ve had the privilege of winning some significant races, but this one stands out. Tannahill is like a beloved family pet; everyone adores him, and he’s truly a magnificent horse. To secure victory in my final race with him was an extraordinary moment.”

As part of his transition, Campbell has sold his property adjacent to the Cambridge Jockey Club and will entrust his racing team to the capable hands of local trainers and dear friends, Craig and Shaun Phelan, before relocating to his hometown in Wairarapa.

“He’s going to Shaun Phelan’s stable, and Shaun is a great mate of mine. He’ll be taking over all the training duties for us,” Campbell confirmed. “My property sale to Stephen Marsh has been finalised, and now I’m eagerly anticipating my move back South since my family resides there.”

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Campbell acknowledged the numerous highlights he’s experienced but emphasized that the most cherished moments revolved around the bonds he formed with a close-knit group of owners, led by the prominent real estate magnate, Tommy Heptinstall.

“While there have been many noteworthy moments, the Group One victories and winning races in Australia certainly stand out,” Campbell recalled. “However, the most significant highlight has been the incredible people I’ve met along the way. The owners who’ve supported me throughout my 15-year career are more than just backers; they’re like family. Having their unwavering support has been a tremendous privilege.”

Campbell reserved special praise for Tommy Heptinstall, without whom he might have considered retiring from the sport long ago. “I can’t speak highly enough of Tommy; he’s a remarkable man,” Campbell emphasised. “His unwavering support and belief in me have been the driving force behind my career, and for that, I’m immensely grateful.”
